This event celebrates the annual Aussie Bird Count, offering a wonderful opportunity to explore diverse habitats and observe local birdlife. Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or a curious beginner, this walk is designed to enhance your bird identification skills and contribute to important citizen science.
Participants of all ages and experience levels are welcome, though those under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian. Please note that dogs are not permitted in the gardens to protect the wildlife.
The event will take place on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, from 07:30 to 09:00. Bring binoculars if you have them to get a closer look at the birds, and a water bottle to stay hydrated during the walk. The walk will cover various habitats within the gardens, providing a rich learning experience about local bird species and their environments.
Meet at the Maranoa Botanic Gardens via the Parring Road entry gate in Balwyn, VIC 3103, just off Whitehorse Road. The meeting point is at the front administration office, approximately 100 metres down the path on the left side after entering the gate. The gardens offer a peaceful setting ideal for birdwatching and family-friendly outdoor activity.
Due to recent confirmations of H5 bird flu in wild birds along Victoria’s coastline and some inland areas, participants should be cautious. While there have been no detections in Boroondara, if you see sick or dead birds or wildlife, avoid direct contact, note the exact location and observations, and report to the Emergency Animal Disease hotline at 1800 675 888.
