Backyard Science Challenge (Primary-aged)

Backyard Science Challenge (Primary-aged)

STEM

Engage your child in a fun, hands-on science challenge designed for primary-aged children to explore the natural world around them.

What to Expect

Kickstart your child's journey into science with this exciting backyard science challenge. Designed for curious primary-aged children, this event encourages kids to think like scientists and explore the creatures and environment in their own backyard, school garden, or local park. No lab coat is required—just a sense of curiosity and a willingness to get outdoors.

The challenge runs across two interactive sessions where children will learn how to design simple investigations and use a portable lab kit filled with tools to help them explore. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to become a citizen scientist and celebrate National Science Week with hands-on activities.

Older children are also welcome to join the fun, making this a great family-friendly event that inspires creativity and scientific thinking.

Activity Details

The event consists of two sessions:

- Session 1 (Wednesday 6 August 2025, 16:00-17:00): Kick off the experiment by learning how to design investigations and borrowing a portable lab kit. Children are encouraged to use everyday items creatively to conduct their experiments.

- Session 2 (Wednesday 20 August 2025, 16:00-17:00): Share findings, discoveries, and creative displays such as photos, drawings, or videos. Participants will have the chance to win a prize for their efforts.

Children can conduct their investigations at home, school, or local parks, spending as little as five minutes a day at a time that suits their schedule.
