What to Expect
Dive headfirst into the vibrant world of Brazilian drumming with O'Ziriguidum Escola de Samba. Whether you're a seasoned percussionist or just starting out, there’s a beat for everyone to catch here. This is more than just a drumming group; it’s a welcoming community where energy, culture, and music come together.
Under the guidance of Mark Grunden, a renowned percussionist from Bad Boys Batucada and Tumbarumba, you’ll explore traditional Brazilian rhythms from samba to samba reggae. The sessions include traditional instruments and vocals to keep the experience lively and engaging.
You’ll find a mix of ages and backgrounds, all united by a love of music and community spirit. It’s a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, enjoy music, and support local events and causes.
Activity Details
Classes run every Thursday during school terms from 7pm to 9pm. The term dates for 2026 are:
- Term 3: 16 July – 17 September
- Term 4: 8 October – 17 December
There is no strict course structure, so you can join whenever it suits you. Beginners will learn the basics of each instrument and rhythm patterns, while regular members help guide you along the way. Sheet music may be provided to help with practice at home.
O'Ziriguidum also offers performance opportunities at community events and street festivals, so you can take your new skills to the stage if you wish.
Location and Access
The classes take place at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. The venue is accessible by public transport:

Important Information
Instruments are provided, so you don’t need to bring your own. However, it’s recommended to bring ear plugs, drinks, and snacks to stay comfortable during the session. The atmosphere is relaxed and inclusive, with no pressure to be perfect—mistakes are part of the fun and learning.
The group welcomes all skill levels and ages, making it a great activity for parents who want to share a cultural and musical experience with their children or simply enjoy a creative outlet themselves.
Booking and Prices
The first class costs $10, and subsequent sessions are $20 each, with a concession price of $15. There is also a membership option where you can purchase five classes upfront and receive a free session.
You can pre-purchase tickets via their website or simply pay on arrival. Both cash and EFTPOS payments are accepted, making it easy and flexible to join.
