Dive headfirst into the vibrant world of Brazilian drumming with O'Ziriguidum Escola de Samba. Whether you're a seasoned percussionist or just starting out, there’s a beat for everyone to catch here. This is more than just a drumming group; it’s a welcoming community where music and friendship come together.
Under the guidance of Mark Grunden, a maestro known for his work with Bad Boys Batucada and Tumbarumba, you will explore powerful rhythms from samba to samba reggae. Traditional Brazilian instruments, complemented with some vocals, keep the sessions lively and engaging.
Our sessions are full of energy and diversity, welcoming people of all ages and backgrounds. Expect to make music, make friends, and support local events and causes in a fun, inclusive environment.
Classes run every Thursday during school terms from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The term dates for 2026 are:
- Term 1: 2026-02-05 to 2026-04-02
- Term 2: 2026-04-23 to 2026-06-25
- Term 3: 2026-07-16 to 2026-09-17
- Term 4: 2026-10-08 to 2026-12-17
There is no strict course structure, so you can join whenever it suits you. Beginners will learn the basics of each instrument and rhythm before moving on to songs. Regular members are available to assist newcomers.
The sessions also offer opportunities to perform at community events and street festivals, making it a fantastic way to showcase your new skills.
Classes are held at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in the hall located underneath the church. The venue is accessible via public transport including Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20), Bus Number 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St).
Participants are encouraged to bring ear plugs, drinks, and snacks. Instruments are provided, so just bring your enthusiasm!
The first class costs $10, with subsequent sessions priced at $20 each or $15 concession. There is also a special membership option where you can purchase 5 classes upfront and receive one free.
Payment can be made via cash or EFTPOS, either by pre-purchasing tickets on the website or paying on arrival. The sessions are inclusive and welcoming to all skill levels.
