Dive headfirst into the vibrant world of Brazilian drumming with O'Ziriguidum Escola de Samba. Whether you're a seasoned percussionist or just starting out, there’s a beat for everyone to catch here. This is more than just a drumming class; it’s a lively community where music, friendship, and fun come together.
Under the guidance of Mark Grunden and the talented members of O'Ziriguidum, you will explore traditional Brazilian percussion techniques and rhythms, from samba to samba reggae. Instruments are provided, and you’ll also enjoy some vocals to spice things up.
Expect a relaxed, supportive environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process. Bring ear plugs, drinks, and snacks to keep energized during the session.
Classes run weekly on Thursdays during school terms from 7pm to 9pm. You can join anytime as there is no strict course structure; each session covers basics and rhythm patterns before moving into songs.
The first class costs $10, with subsequent sessions at $20 each or $15 concession. There’s also a membership option to buy 5 classes upfront and get one free. Payment can be made on arrival by cash or EFTPOS, or tickets can be pre-purchased online.
This is a great opportunity to learn, jam, and even perform at community events and festivals with the group. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
The classes take place at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. The venue is accessible by public transport, including Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20) and Bus Numbers 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St).
This central location makes it easy to fit into your weekly routine, whether you’re coming from nearby or further afield.
Please bring your own ear plugs, drinks, and snacks to stay comfortable during the sessions. Instruments are provided, so no need to bring your own.
The classes run during the school terms in 2026: Term 3 from 16 July to 17 September. You can attend any Thursday that suits you within these dates.
