Dive headfirst into the vibrant world of Brazilian drumming with O'Ziriguidum Escola de Samba. Whether you're a seasoned percussionist or just starting out, there’s a beat for everyone to catch here. This is not just a drumming class; it’s a lively community where music and friendship come together.
Under the guidance of Mark Grunden, a maestro known for his work with Bad Boys Batucada and Tumbarumba, you'll explore powerful rhythms from samba to samba reggae. Traditional Brazilian instruments and some vocals keep the sessions lively and engaging.
Expect a mix of energy, ages, and backgrounds all mashed up into one dynamic bundle. It’s a place to jam, make friends, and support local events and causes.
Classes run every Thursday during school terms from 7pm to 9pm. The sessions cover the basics of each instrument and different rhythms before moving into songs. Regular members are on hand to help newcomers, making it easy to join at any skill level.
The term dates for 2026 are:
- Term 1: 5 February – 2 April
- Term 2: 23 April – 25 June
- Term 3: 16 July – 17 September
- Term 4: 8 October – 17 December
You can attend whenever it suits you, as the classes don’t follow a strict course structure. Instruments are provided, but bringing ear plugs, drinks, and snacks is recommended.
The classes take place at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. The venue is easily accessible by public transport.
You can reach the location via Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20) or Bus Numbers 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St). This makes it convenient for families coming from different parts of the city.
The first class costs $10, and subsequent sessions are $20 each, with a concession price of $15. There is also a special membership option where you can buy 5 classes upfront and receive a free session.
Payment can be made by cash or EFTPOS, either on arrival or by pre-purchasing tickets via the website. The sessions are welcoming to all skill levels and ages.
Joining the group also offers opportunities to perform at community events and street festivals, making it a fun and rewarding experience for the whole family.
