Dive headfirst into the vibrant world of Brazilian drumming with O'Ziriguidum Escola de Samba. Whether you're a seasoned percussionist or just starting out, there’s a beat for everyone to catch here. This community is not just about music, but also about making friends and supporting local events and causes.
Under the guidance of Mark Grunden, a renowned percussionist from Bad Boys Batucada and Tumbarumba, you will explore traditional Brazilian percussion techniques and patterns. From samba to samba reggae, the sessions cover a range of powerful rhythms using traditional instruments and some vocals to keep things lively. The classes are welcoming to all skill levels and ages, with regular members available to help newcomers.
Classes are held every Thursday during school terms from 7pm to 9pm. You can join anytime as the course structure is flexible, focusing on basics before moving into songs. Instruments are provided, but bringing ear plugs, drinks, and snacks is recommended. The first class costs $10, with subsequent sessions at $20 or $15 concession. There is also a membership option for five classes with a free session included.
The classes take place at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. Public transport options include Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20) and Bus Numbers 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St), making it easily accessible for families.
The classes run during school terms with the following dates in 2026: Term 1 from 5 February to 2 April, Term 2 from 23 April to 25 June, Term 3 from 16 July to 17 September, and Term 4 from 8 October to 17 December. You can attend as often as you like without a strict course commitment. The sessions are designed to be fun and inclusive, encouraging learning through play and community spirit.
