Dive headfirst into the vibrant world of Brazilian drumming with O'Ziriguidum Escola de Samba. Whether you're a seasoned percussionist or just starting out, there’s a beat for everyone to catch here. This isn’t just a drumming group; it’s a lively community where energy, culture, and music come together.
Under the guidance of Mark Grunden, a renowned percussionist from Bad Boys Batucada and Tumbarumba, you’ll explore traditional Brazilian rhythms from samba to samba reggae. The sessions include traditional instruments and some vocals to keep things lively and engaging.
Expect a warm, welcoming environment where all ages and backgrounds mix to create powerful rhythms. It’s not just about music; it’s about making friends and supporting local events and causes.
Activity Details
Classes run every Thursday during school terms from 19:00 to 21:00. You can join anytime during the term as the classes don’t follow a strict course structure. Beginners will learn the basics of each instrument and rhythm before moving on to songs.
You’ll receive guidance from regular members and may get sheets to practice at home. The sessions are designed to be fun and inclusive, with no pressure to be perfect – mistakes are part of the learning journey.
Performances at community events and festivals are also part of the experience, giving you a chance to take the stage and showcase your new skills.
Location and Access
The classes are held at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. The venue is accessible by public transport, including Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20) and Bus Numbers 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St).
Bring your own ear plugs, drinks, and snacks. Instruments are provided, so just bring your enthusiasm and energy.
Important Information
The first class costs $10, and subsequent sessions are $20 each, with a concession price of $15. There is also a membership option where you can buy 5 classes upfront and receive a free session.
Payment can be made on arrival via cash or EFTPOS, or you can pre-purchase tickets through their website. The classes run during school terms in 2026: Term 2 from 23 April to 25 June.
All skill levels are welcome, and the focus is on fun, learning, and community.
