Under the expert guidance of Mark Grunden, a maestro known from Bad Boys Batucada and Tumbarumba, you’ll explore traditional Brazilian percussion techniques. From samba to samba reggae, the sessions cover a wide range of rhythms using authentic instruments and some lively vocals to keep things exciting. Expect a mix of ages and backgrounds, all united by a love of music and community spirit.
Classes run every Thursday during school terms from 7pm to 9pm. The sessions are flexible, allowing you to join whenever it suits you without a strict course structure. Beginners will learn the basics of each instrument and rhythm patterns, while regular members provide ongoing support. You’ll also have opportunities to perform at community events and festivals, making it a fun and engaging way to connect with others.
The classes take place at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. Public transport options include Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20) and Bus Numbers 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St), making it easily accessible for families.
Bring your own ear plugs, drinks, and snacks for comfort during the sessions. Instruments are provided, so no need to bring your own. The group welcomes all skill levels and ages, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where mistakes are part of the fun and learning process.
The first class costs $10, with subsequent sessions at $20 each or $15 concession. There is also a membership option to purchase five classes upfront and receive a free session. Payment can be made via pre-purchased tickets on their website or on arrival by cash or EFTPOS.
