Expect to explore a variety of traditional Brazilian rhythms, including samba and samba reggae, played on authentic instruments. The sessions also include some vocal elements to keep the experience dynamic and engaging. It's not just about drumming; it's about joining a supportive community that loves to perform and celebrate together.
Activity Details
Classes run weekly on Thursdays during school terms, from 19:00 to 21:00. You can join at any time during the term without needing to commit to a full course. Each session includes instruction on different instruments and rhythms, with support from experienced members and the founder, Mark Grunden.
You’ll receive helpful learning sheets to practice at home, and there’s plenty of opportunity to perform at local community events and festivals. Instruments are provided, but bringing ear plugs, drinks, and snacks is recommended.
Location and Access
The classes take place at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. The venue is easily accessible by public transport, including Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20) and Bus Numbers 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St).
This central location makes it convenient for families living in and around Merri-bek to attend after school or work. The welcoming atmosphere ensures a comfortable experience for both parents and children.
Important Information
The first class costs $10, with subsequent sessions priced at $20 each or $15 concession. There is also a membership option to purchase five classes upfront with a free session included. Payment can be made on arrival by cash or EFTPOS.
Classes run during the school terms in 2026: Term 1 (5 Feb–2 Apr), Term 2 (23 Apr–25 Jun), Term 3 (16 Jul–17 Sep), and Term 4 (8 Oct–17 Dec). You can attend any session that suits your schedule without a strict course structure.
