What to Expect
Experience a rewarding morning outdoors helping to restore the natural beauty of Stonequarry Creek. This event is perfect for families who want to teach their children the importance of environmental stewardship and community involvement. You'll get hands-on with planting native trees and removing invasive weeds that threaten the local ecosystem.
The activity is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it a great weekend outing for parents and school-aged children. Volunteers will work alongside council staff and community groups, sharing knowledge and enjoying the fresh air by the creek.
Activity Details
The focus will be on clearing invasive species such as Trad, Turkey Rhubarb, Privet, and Wild Tobacco, which block water flow and increase flood risks. Volunteers will also plant hardy local natives including Paperbarks, She-oaks, Wattles, Tea-tree, and Mat Rush to stabilise the creek banks and restore habitat for birds and insects.
This hands-on environmental restoration supports flood resilience and helps bring back the rich river-flat forest that once thrived in the area. Tools and gloves will be provided, but participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and sun protection.
Location and Access
The event takes place on the banks of Stonequarry Creek, next to Hume Oval in Picton. The site is located on the western side of Hume Oval, directly across from the car park. Look for the Bushcare sign beside the cycleway for easy identification.
Picton is accessible by car, and parking is available at Hume Oval. The location offers a beautiful natural setting beside the creek, perfect for a family-friendly outdoor activity.
Important Information
Please wear comfortable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for creekside work. Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated and sun protection such as a hat and sunscreen. Children should be supervised at all times.
The creek can flood quickly during heavy rain, so the event may be rescheduled in case of severe weather. Volunteers will be working near water, so caution is advised.
This is a community-driven event supported by Wollondilly Shire Council, acknowledging the Dharawal and Gundungurra peoples as Traditional Custodians of the land.
