Step back in time and become part of living history as you join archaeologists, students, and local heritage volunteers in uncovering Guildford’s fascinating past. This unique community excavation offers a rare opportunity to explore the site of the former Convict Depot Hospital and historic well behind the iconic Guildford Post Office.
You’ll get hands-on experience digging for artefacts that reveal the everyday lives of those who lived, worked, and recovered here. It’s a chance to connect with local history champions and contribute to preserving a treasured landmark.

The excavation runs over three days with small, two-hour sessions to ensure an intimate and educational experience. Sessions are scheduled for:
- Saturday, August 8, 2026 | 12:30 - 14:30
- Sunday, August 9, 2026 | 09:30 - 11:30 and 12:30 - 14:30
- Monday, August 10, 2026 | 09:30 - 11:30
Led by Dr Shane Burke, a senior archaeology lecturer and heritage expert, you’ll learn excavation techniques and the significance of the artefacts uncovered. This is a family-friendly event suitable for all ages, perfect for parents wanting to inspire their children with hands-on history.
The excavation takes place at the Historic Guildford Post Office, located at the corner of Stirling Street and Meadow Street, Guildford WA 6055. This central location is easily accessible by car or public transport, with parking nearby.
Guildford is one of Western Australia’s most historic towns, offering a charming backdrop for your archaeological adventure. The site is outdoors, so dress comfortably and be prepared for weather conditions.
Please register early as places are limited for each session to maintain a quality experience. If you prefer to observe rather than participate, you are welcome to come along and learn about archaeology by viewing the dig in progress.
Photography and video will be taken during the event for promotional purposes. Notify the team on arrival if you do not wish to be photographed.
Bring sturdy shoes, sun protection, and a sense of curiosity. All tools and safety equipment will be provided by the organisers.
