Join a rewarding community planting event dedicated to restoring the habitat of one of Australia's most extraordinary and endangered insects, the Southern Pink Underwing Moth. This striking moth depends solely on the Carronia vine, a subtropical rainforest climber thriving in shaded forest areas.
You will be part of creating a dense native microforest using thick mulch and closely spaced rainforest plants. This method mimics natural rainforest regeneration, quickly building canopy cover, suppressing weeds, and retaining moisture essential for sensitive understorey plants like Carronia.
This event is family-friendly and requires no prior planting experience, making it a perfect outdoor activity for parents and children to connect with nature and contribute to conservation.
The planting session will take place on Saturday 11th April 2026 from 09:00 to 11:00. Participants will plant over 500 native tubestock plants to expand and enrich the habitat for rainforest insects, birds, and mammals.
Light morning tea will be provided to keep everyone refreshed. Please bring a hat, sunscreen, water bottle, gloves if you have them (spares available), sturdy shoes or boots, and a raincoat if the weather looks wet. You may also bring a chair or blanket if you wish to enjoy the morning tea comfortably.
The event has a maximum of 50 places, so bookings are essential to secure your spot.
The planting will be held at Avocado Lane Reserve in Maleny, QLD 4552. This sheltered, moist site already contains remnant rainforest plants, making it ideal for expanding the habitat for the Southern Pink Underwing Moth and other wildlife.
The reserve is accessible for families and offers a beautiful natural environment to enjoy while contributing to local conservation efforts.
This planting event is a partnership between Barung Landcare and Healthy Land & Water, funded through the Australian Government’s Saving Native Species grant.
Children are welcome but must be supervised by an adult at all times. No prior experience is needed, making it accessible for everyone interested in helping the environment.
Please verify event details on the official website before attending, as event information may change. The council and event organizers are not responsible for any errors or changes.
Participation is free, but places are limited to 50 attendees. Booking is essential to guarantee your spot.
Reserve your place early to be part of this meaningful community conservation activity and enjoy a morning connecting with nature and fellow enthusiasts.
