Confined 17 offers a unique and heartfelt exhibition space dedicated to First Nations people who have experienced incarceration in Victoria. Through their artworks, these individuals share their stories, culture, and lived experiences, creating a powerful platform for reflection and understanding.
Visitors will engage with a moving collection of visual art that highlights the disproportionate representation of First Nations Australians in the criminal justice system. The exhibition is a poignant reminder of the urgent need for change and healing. Each piece is crafted with deep cultural significance and personal narrative.
The exhibition is part of The Torch’s Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community program, which aims to reduce re-offending rates by fostering cultural connection through visual arts. This program supports participants’ cultural, social, emotional, and financial wellbeing, empowering new pathways beyond the criminal justice system. Notably, 100% of the sale price of each artwork goes directly to the artist.
Confined 17 is held at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery, located at the corner of Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads in Caulfield. The venue is accessible and welcoming to all visitors, providing an opportunity to experience these impactful artworks in a community-focused setting.
The exhibition runs on Sunday, 24 May 2026, from 13:00 to 17:00. It is a family-friendly event that encourages reflection and conversation about Indigenous culture and justice. Visitors are encouraged to respect the stories shared and support the artists by considering the purchase of artworks.
Entry to the exhibition is free, making it an accessible cultural experience for all. Artworks are available for purchase, with proceeds going entirely to the artists, supporting their ongoing creative and personal journeys.
