Confined 17 offers a powerful and moving exhibition dedicated to First Nations people who have experienced incarceration in Victoria. Through their artworks, participants share their stories, culture, and lived experiences, creating a space for reflection and understanding. This event highlights the disproportionate representation of First Nations Australians in the criminal justice system and the urgent need for change.
Visitors will encounter a diverse range of visual artworks created by participants in The Torch’s Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community program. The exhibition serves not only as an artistic showcase but also as a platform for cultural connection and empowerment. Attendees can expect to engage with meaningful stories that foster empathy and awareness.
The exhibition runs for one day, providing a unique opportunity to view these impactful works. One hundred percent of the proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists, supporting their wellbeing and future pathways beyond the justice system. The program aims to improve cultural, social, emotional, and financial wellbeing through creative expression.
Confined 17 is held at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery, located at the corner of Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads in Caulfield. The gallery is accessible and situated within a community-friendly area, making it easy for families to visit. Visitors are encouraged to check onsite signage for directions and access details.
This event is a respectful and thoughtful exhibition intended to raise awareness and support for First Nations communities affected by incarceration. It is suitable for adults and older children who can appreciate the cultural and social themes presented. The gallery environment is welcoming and inclusive.
Entry to the exhibition is free. Artworks are available for purchase, with all sales supporting the artists directly. No prior booking is required, allowing for flexible attendance during the event hours.
