Confined 17 offers a powerful and moving experience, providing a dedicated space for First Nations people to share their stories, culture, and lived experiences through their artwork. This exhibition highlights the urgent need for change regarding the disproportionate representation of First Nations Australians in the criminal justice system.
Visitors will encounter a diverse collection of artworks created by participants in The Torch’s Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community program. Each piece reflects personal journeys and cultural connections, fostering empathy and understanding. The exhibition is a unique opportunity to engage with meaningful art that supports social justice and cultural empowerment.
The exhibition runs for one day, on Friday, 8 May 2026, from 10:00 to 17:00. It is the annual public showcase of The Torch’s program, which aims to reduce re-offending by promoting cultural, social, emotional, and financial wellbeing through visual arts. All proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists, supporting their ongoing creative and personal development.
Confined 17 is held at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery, located at the corner of Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads, Caulfield. The venue is accessible and situated within easy reach of public transport and parking options, making it convenient for families to visit.
This exhibition is suitable for adults and older children interested in cultural and social justice themes. It provides a respectful and educational environment to learn about First Nations experiences related to incarceration. Visitors are encouraged to approach the artworks with openness and reflection.
Admission to Confined 17 is free. Artworks are available for purchase, with 100% of the price going directly to the artists. No prior booking is required to attend the exhibition.
