Confined 17 offers a powerful and moving exhibition dedicated to First Nations people who have experienced incarceration in Victoria. Through their artworks, participants share their stories, culture, and lived experiences, creating a space for reflection and understanding. This exhibition highlights the urgent need for change in the criminal justice system by addressing the disproportionate representation of First Nations Australians.
Visitors will encounter a diverse range of artworks created by participants in The Torch’s Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community program. The exhibition serves as a public showcase of this program’s commitment to reducing re-offending by fostering cultural connection through visual arts. Attendees can expect to see meaningful pieces that empower artists and promote healing.
The exhibition runs for one day, providing a focused opportunity to engage with the artworks and their stories. One hundred percent of the proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists, supporting their cultural, social, emotional, and financial wellbeing. This event is ideal for families and community members interested in cultural heritage and social justice.
Confined 17 is held at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery, located at the corner of Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads in Caulfield. The venue is accessible and welcoming to all visitors, with clear signage and public transport options nearby. Parking and other amenities are available to ensure a comfortable visit.
This exhibition is a respectful and thoughtful space that encourages reflection on the experiences of First Nations people within the justice system. Visitors are invited to engage with the artworks thoughtfully and support the artists by considering purchasing pieces. The event is family-friendly and suitable for school-aged children accompanied by adults.
Entry to Confined 17 is free, making it an accessible cultural event for the whole community. Artwork purchases are optional, with all proceeds supporting the artists directly. No prior booking is required, allowing visitors to attend at their convenience during the event hours.
