Best Start is a dedicated program focusing on vulnerable children and all Aboriginal children to ensure they have access to quality early childhood experiences. This initiative supports families and caregivers in providing the best environment and care for children from birth to eight years old.
Families can expect comprehensive support through maternal and child health services, supported playgroups, and kindergartens. The program prioritizes children who are vulnerable or identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, ensuring they receive early education opportunities tailored to their needs.
The Early Start Kindergarten (ESK) offers eligible children 15 hours of free or low-cost kindergarten weekly for two years before starting school. Eligibility criteria include Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity, contact with child protection services, or holding specific refugee or humanitarian visas. All kindergarten programs are delivered by qualified teachers.
The program is available throughout the City of Darebin at various local kindergartens and supported playgroups. Families can register online quickly and easily to access these services. Additional resources and support are available through Darebin Council's community services.
The program is funded by the Victorian Government and administered by the Department of Education and Training. It is a place-based initiative that collaborates with local communities to address neighborhood-level needs. The Darebin Best Start Aboriginal Reference Group also provides culturally relevant resources, including video series to support families.
Registration for Early Start Kindergarten is available online and takes less than two minutes to complete. The program offers 15 hours per week of free or low-cost kindergarten for eligible children. For further information, families can contact the Best Start Project Leader via phone or email.
