The Great Glossy Count is an exciting opportunity for families to engage with nature and contribute to important conservation efforts. This nationwide event invites participants of all ages to help collect data on Glossy species, supporting their protection and preservation.
You can join from anywhere across Australia, making it a flexible and accessible activity for busy parents and their school-aged children. It’s a wonderful way to encourage kids to appreciate wildlife and learn about environmental stewardship.
Remember to observe wildlife respectfully and avoid disturbing Glossies or other animals during your count.
The event takes place over the weekend of Saturday 16 May and Sunday 17 May 2026. Participants are encouraged to record sightings of Glossies and submit their data to help conservationists track populations.
You must have permission to enter private properties, and all observations should be made without disrupting the animals’ natural behavior.
Even if you cannot participate on these dates, any Glossy sightings submitted to BioNet at any time are valuable for ongoing conservation efforts.
This event is held across Australia, so you can participate from your local area or any natural environment where Glossies may be found.
No specific venue is required, making it easy to fit into your weekend plans. Just be sure to respect the land and wildlife wherever you observe.
Always respect the Country you are on and the flora and fauna you encounter.
Do not disturb Glossies or other wildlife for photos or identification.
Permission from landowners is required to enter private property.
Data collected contributes to BioNet, the NSW Government’s biodiversity database, which protects sensitive information with varying access levels.
Entry to the Great Glossy Count is free for all participants.
No booking is required, simply register as a BioNet user online if you wish to contribute data.
Further information and registration links are available on the Great Glossy Count website.
