Every month, something quietly wonderful happens at South Brisbane Cemetery. Neighbours, families, history lovers, and curious newcomers roll up their sleeves and come together as part of our Guardian Angels program. This cheerful, hands-on initiative invites all ages to help clean and care for the graves of those long gone but never forgotten.
This relaxed, feel-good day offers a unique opportunity to connect with local history while giving back to the community. Participants will gently wash headstones, trim overgrown grass, and uncover long-hidden inscriptions. Children often enjoy the treasure hunt aspect, while adults appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and chance to meet new friends.
The event runs from 9:00 to 15:00 and is suitable for all ages. No experience is needed, and all tools and guidance are provided. Volunteers work section by section with care and respect, honouring lives lived and reconnecting the community with its past. Bring a hat, enthusiasm, and perhaps a friend or two for a rewarding morning.
Held at South Brisbane Cemetery, located at 185 Annerley Road, Dutton Park, this event takes place in a historic and serene setting. The cemetery is accessible by public transport and has ample space for families to participate comfortably.
Bookings are not required, making it easy to drop in and join the effort. The event is free of charge and welcomes volunteers of all ages. It is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning outdoors, contributing to the preservation of Brisbane’s heritage.
This event is free and open to the public with no need to book. For more information, visit the South Brisbane Cemetery website. Come along and be part of something special because every grave has a story, and every helping hand makes a difference.
