What to Expect
Dive into a hands-on 2-hour makerspace session designed especially for home-school families with children aged 8 to 12 years. This engaging workshop introduces kids and their parents or guardians to the exciting world of digital fabrication, including 3D printing and laser cutting.
Participants will explore beginner-friendly software like Tinkercad to create their own 3D designs, supported by experienced facilitators who encourage creativity and peer learning. Whether starting fresh or working on personal projects, everyone will find inspiration and support.
The session also offers access to robotics, electronics, and various maker resources, making it a fun and educational experience for the whole family.
Activity Details
This practical workshop focuses on core digital fabrication skills such as 3D design, 3D printing, graphic design, and laser cutting. Children will learn how to use open-source software and engage in maker activities including electronics and physical computing.
All materials and tools are provided, including 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics components, craft supplies, and STEM kits. High-powered laptops and iPads are available for use, along with robotics kits like Makey Makey, Ozobot, Sphero, Edison, and Little Bits.
Each child’s 3D print is limited to 30 minutes, and laser cut projects are restricted to materials sized 10cm by 10cm. No prior experience is required, making it perfect for beginners.
Location and Access
The workshop takes place at Darling Square Library, Levels 1 and 2, The Exchange, 1 Little Pier Street, Haymarket NSW 2000, specifically in the Makerspace on level 1.
The venue is accessible and welcoming to families, with a friendly environment designed to foster creativity and learning. Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay and participate alongside their children in the makerspace.
Those not staying in the makerspace should remain in the library during the session.
Important Information
The session is suitable for children aged 8 to 12 years, and accompanying adults attend free of charge. Each participant should bring a USB drive to save their work.
Bookings are essential with a maximum of 15 children per session to ensure quality guidance and support. Cancellations can be made up to 7 days before the event; cancellations within 7 days are non-refundable.

Booking and Prices
The cost is $10 per child, with adults attending for free. Bookings can be made online through the City of Sydney website.
