What to Expect
Experience a unique cultural workshop where you will learn traditional First Nations weaving techniques combined with contemporary materials and language. Guided by First Nations artists Suzy, Sonya, and Sarah Smith from South Australia's Southeast, this workshop offers a meaningful connection to local heritage and creativity.
You will have the opportunity to weave disks that form the exterior cladding of animal totem sculptures, contributing to a large-scale community art project. This hands-on experience is suitable for all skill levels, including beginners, and is designed for participants aged 8 years and older.
By the end of the session, you will receive a complimentary take-home weaving kit to continue your crafting journey, making this workshop a lasting and enriching experience for the whole family.
Activity Details
The workshop is free of charge but requires registration. There are two identical sessions to choose from: 11:00am to 1:00pm or 2:00pm to 4:00pm on 11 July 2026. All materials are provided, and tea and coffee will be available.
Participants are encouraged to wear suitable clothing for an art workshop and may bring their own snacks. Reading glasses are recommended if needed. If you cannot attend after registering, please notify the organisers by 3 July 2026 to allow others to participate.
This workshop is part of the Kingston Weaving project, an ongoing state-wide sculpture initiative focusing on cultural representation of animal totems and local environment, premiering at the 2027 Nature Festival.
Location and Access
The workshop will be held at Fabrik, located at 1 Lobethal Rd, Lobethal SA 5241, Australia. Fabrik is accessible within the Adelaide Hills region, known for its beautiful landscapes and vibrant community arts scene.
Parking is available at Fabrik, and a helpful diagram is provided to assist attendees. The venue is welcoming and suitable for families, making it a convenient and enjoyable location for this cultural activity.
Important Information
This workshop is suitable for participants aged 8 years and older, with no prior weaving experience required. It is designed to be family-friendly and inclusive.
Registration is essential as places are limited. The workshop is free, supported by various arts and community organisations, ensuring a high-quality cultural experience.
