What to Expect
Get ready for an engaging autumn adventure designed especially for families and children. The Leaf Hopper Trail invites young explorers to discover the amazing world of leaves—the quiet superheroes of nature. From their role in photosynthesis to their vibrant colors and textures, leaves offer a fascinating glimpse into the natural environment.
Kids will join Lil the Leaf Hopper on a quest to find special leaves scattered throughout the garden. This interactive experience encourages observation and curiosity as children search for big veined leaves, juicy leaves, leaves that aren’t green, and trickster leaves that might not look like leaves at all.
This self-guided trail is perfect for a relaxed family outing where children can connect with nature and learn through play. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy the fresh air and the beauty of Wollongong Botanic Garden during the autumn season.
Activity Details
The trail runs from April 24 to April 27, 2026, starting early in the morning at 7:00 and continuing until the garden closes at 18:45. Families can pick up a Leaf Hopper Trail flyer at the welcome signs located around the garden, which includes a map and instructions to follow the arrows.
Participants are encouraged to observe leaves on plants without picking them, as leaves provide essential energy and shelter for wildlife. Fallen leaves can be collected for closer examination of their shapes, sizes, colors, and textures, making this a hands-on learning experience.
This activity is free of charge and suitable for children and families looking for a fun and educational outdoor experience during the school holidays.
