Embark on a coding adventure and unleash your creativity by designing your very own retro arcade game. This program is perfect for teens interested in learning the basics of game development in a fun, hands-on environment.

What to Expect

Get ready to dive into the exciting world of coding with Microsoft MakeCode Arcade! You'll use a visual block-based coding system, making it easy to learn the fundamentals of game logic. No prior coding experience is needed – just bring your enthusiasm and imagination.

Throughout the workshop, you'll learn how to design levels, create unique characters, and add exciting elements like projectiles and enemies. Our experienced instructors will guide you through the process, providing support and encouragement every step of the way.

At the end of the session, you'll have the thrill of seeing your game loaded onto our mini arcade-game machine, ready to be played and enjoyed by everyone in the library! Show off your creation and challenge your friends to beat your high score.

Activity Details

This program is designed for young adults aged 12-18 years old. Sessions run monthly, typically on the last Thursday of each month, from 4 pm to 6 pm. Bookings are essential and open approximately one month prior to each session. Be sure to book early to secure your spot!

The workshop will cover the basics of game design, including level creation, character development, and coding game mechanics. You'll learn how to use Microsoft MakeCode Arcade's intuitive interface to bring your game ideas to life.

All necessary equipment and software will be provided. Just bring your creativity and a willingness to learn!

Location and Access

The coding workshops are held at the Lionel Bowen Library in Maroubra, conveniently located at 669-673 Anzac Parade. The library is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus routes servicing the area. There is also limited street parking available.

The library offers accessible facilities for participants with disabilities. Please contact the library in advance if you have any specific access requirements.

The library is a welcoming and inclusive space for all members of the community.

Important Information

Bookings are free but required for each session. Please cancel your booking if you are unable to attend so that someone else can take your place. Tickets are not transferable.

Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow time for check-in and setup. Due to the nature of the workshop, latecomers may not be admitted after the session has started.

The workshops are free of charge. Bookings can be made online through Eventbrite. Bookings open approximately one month prior to each session. Please visit the Randwick City Library website for more information and to book your spot.

Library membership is required to participate. If you are not already a member, you can join online or in person at any Randwick City Library branch.
