Unleash your inner game developer and create your own retro arcade game! This exciting workshop will guide you through the process of building a game from scratch, using Microsoft Makecode Arcade, a block-based coding platform that makes coding fun and accessible for everyone.
What to Expect
Get ready to dive into the world of game design! You'll learn the fundamentals of coding using visual blocks, allowing you to build the logic of your game without complex syntax. You'll design your game's level, create unique characters, and even draw your own projectiles and enemies. It's a hands-on, creative experience where you bring your game ideas to life.
You'll be amazed at what you can create! Our experienced instructors will guide you through each step, providing support and encouragement along the way. No prior coding experience is needed – just a passion for gaming and a desire to learn.
At the end of the workshop, your game will be loaded onto our mini arcade-game machine and displayed in the library for everyone to play. Imagine seeing your creation come to life and sharing it with your friends and family!
Activity Details
This workshop is designed for teens aged 12-18 years old. Sessions run monthly, typically on the last Thursday of the month, from 4 pm to 6 pm. Bookings are essential and open approximately one month prior to each session. The workshop is free, but spaces are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment.
The workshop will cover the basics of game design, including level design, character creation, and coding game logic. You'll learn how to use Microsoft Makecode Arcade's intuitive interface to build your game step-by-step.
All necessary equipment and software will be provided. Just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!
Location and Access
The workshop will be held at the Lionel Bowen Library in Maroubra, located at 669-673 Anzac Parade. The library is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus routes stopping nearby.
The library has accessible facilities, including wheelchair access and accessible restrooms. If you have any specific access requirements, please let us know when booking, and we will do our best to accommodate your needs.
There is limited parking available at the library, so please allow extra time to find a parking spot if you are driving.

Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow the event to run on time. Latecomers may not be admitted after the start time.
