What to Expect

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the exciting world of game development using Microsoft Makecode Arcade. You'll learn the basics of coding through a visual block-based interface, making it easy to grasp even without prior coding experience. Our experienced instructors will guide you through the process of designing game levels, creating unique characters, and adding exciting elements like projectiles and enemies.

Get ready to unleash your creativity and bring your game ideas to life! You'll be amazed at what you can achieve with a little code and a lot of imagination. The workshop provides a supportive and collaborative environment where you can learn from your peers and share your creations.

By the end of the program, you'll have a fully functional arcade game that you can proudly display on our mini arcade machine in the library for everyone to enjoy.

Activity Details

This workshop is designed for young people aged 12-18 years old. No prior coding experience is necessary. All materials and equipment will be provided, including laptops and access to the Microsoft Makecode Arcade platform. The sessions run for two hours, from 4 pm to 6 pm, on the last Thursday of each month.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of game design, including level design, character creation, and adding interactive elements. They will also gain valuable coding skills using the block-based interface, which can be a stepping stone to more advanced programming languages. The workshop encourages creativity and problem-solving, empowering teens to build their own unique games.

The program culminates with the opportunity to showcase your creations on our mini arcade machine in the library, allowing you to share your work with the community and experience the thrill of seeing others play your game.

Location and Access

The coding workshops are held at the Lionel Bowen Library in Maroubra, conveniently located at 669-673 Anzac Parade. The library is easily accessible by public transport, with several bus routes servicing the area. There is also ample street parking available for those driving.

The library offers a welcoming and accessible environment for all participants. The workshop space is equipped with comfortable seating, accessible restrooms, and a dedicated area for breaks and refreshments. Our friendly staff are always on hand to assist with any questions or needs.

Important Information

Bookings are essential for each session and can be made approximately one month in advance. The workshops are free to attend, but spaces are limited, so early booking is recommended. Please note that these workshops are for library members. If you are not yet a member, you can easily join online.

If you are unable to attend a session you have booked, please cancel your booking as soon as possible to allow others on the waiting list to participate. The tickets are not transferable. Please arrive 10 minutes before the start time to allow for check-in and setup. Due to the nature of the workshop, latecomers may not be admitted after the session has begun.

Your attendance at this event may be digitally recorded through photographs and/or video recordings for promotional purposes. If you do not wish your image to be published, please notify staff before the event.

Booking and Prices

The "Learn to Code" workshops are free for library members. Bookings are required for each session you wish to attend and can be made online through Eventbrite. Bookings open approximately one month prior to each session. Spaces are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. If you experience any issues booking, please contact the library directly.
