If your child loves reading and chatting about books, Lightning Readers Book Chat is the perfect monthly gathering. Designed for children aged 8 to 12, this club offers a relaxed and friendly environment where young readers can share their thoughts on their latest reads. There are no set texts, so kids can discuss any book they are currently enjoying, from popular series like Enola Holmes to Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
The sessions include drinks and snacks, making it a cozy and inviting space for children to connect over their love of books. It’s a wonderful opportunity for your child to build confidence in expressing their opinions and to discover new books through peer recommendations.
The book chat takes place on the first Wednesday of each month from 16:00 to 17:00 at the St Kilda Library. Please note that the program pauses during school holidays, so it does not run in those weeks. The club encourages open discussion rather than structured reading, so children can bring any book they want to talk about.
This program is ideal for parents looking for an engaging, educational activity that nurtures a child’s reading habit and social skills. It’s also a great way to keep kids connected with their peers in a supportive setting.
The sessions are held at St Kilda Library, a welcoming and accessible venue located in the heart of the community. The library offers free Wi-Fi, computers, and a range of other services to support visitors.
If your child has any accessibility requirements or needs adjustments to participate fully, the library staff are happy to assist. You can contact them ahead of time to ensure a comfortable experience.
The program does not run during school holidays, with the regular sessions ending on Friday 19 December and resuming the week of Monday 2 February 2026. Registration is required to join the club, and parents can sign their children up via the provided link.
For any questions or accessibility requests, the library can be contacted by phone or email. This ensures every child has the opportunity to participate in this enriching program.
Participation in Lightning Readers Book Chat is free of charge. To register, parents should use the online registration link provided by the Port Phillip Library Service. Early registration is recommended as spots may be limited.
No fees or materials are required, making this an accessible and cost-effective way to encourage your child’s love of reading and discussion.
