Darebin Council stands firmly against discrimination in all its forms and values the rich diversity of its community. The council envisions a racism-free Darebin where everyone is respected and included. This commitment is reflected in their endorsement of the Towards Equality: Equity, Inclusion and Human Rights Framework 2019-2029, aiming for a fairer and more inclusive city.
You can expect a community-focused approach that actively promotes inclusion and fights discrimination such as racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. The council works in partnership with organizations like the Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (VEOHRC) and participates in national campaigns such as Racism. It Stops With Me.
The council provides resources and tools to support reporting discrimination, including the Community Reporting Tool (CRT) which simplifies the process of making complaints. They have also collaborated with neighboring councils to produce an Anti-racism Booklet that offers guidance and support for those experiencing racism. These efforts are backed by research and community voices to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
Darebin Council offices are located at 274 Gower Street, Preston, VIC 3072, with postal services at PO Box 91, Preston, VIC 3072. Support and information can be accessed via phone, email, and online platforms. The council also maintains active social media channels for community engagement.
The council encourages anyone who experiences or witnesses discrimination to report it, even if unsure whether it qualifies as discrimination. The VEOHRC is an independent agency that handles complaints confidentially and offers follow-up support. The council’s approach is inclusive, recognizing the importance of cultural respect and the role of Aboriginal Elders in the community.
