Bring the family to PermaBee, a hands-on community gardening program at the Randwick Sustainability Hub. This is a gentle, practical way to teach children about sustainability, composting and growing food while enjoying fresh air and friendly company.
What to Expect
Expect relaxed Friday mornings focused on planting, weeding, mulching and composting under the guidance of experienced volunteers. Activities are hands-on and designed to be child-friendly so your school-aged kids can learn while they help.
You’ll take part in group gardening tasks, a shared morning tea break and the chance to harvest seasonal produce together. It’s a great way to introduce children to gardening skills, sustainability practices and where food comes from.
The program is social and low-pressure — brilliant for busy parents who want a purposeful outdoor activity for their children that also builds community connections in Randwick and supports local biodiversity and sustainability.
Activity Details
PermaBee runs every Friday, 09:00 to 12:30, from 2026-01-30 until 2026-12-18. Sessions are weekly and family-friendly, aimed at school-aged children with parent supervision encouraged for younger kids.
What to bring:
- Comfortable shoes, sun hat and a water bottle
- Closed-toe shoes and gardening gloves if you have them
- A positive attitude and curiosity — kids learn best by doing
Volunteers and staff provide tools, composting instruction and simple gardening demonstrations. Participants learn safe tool use, plant care and sustainable gardening techniques that you can try at home.
Location and Access
The program meets at Randwick Sustainability Hub, 27 Munda Street, Randwick. It’s a community hub situated close to local transport and neighborhood streets, making drop-off straightforward for families in the area.
There is limited on-site parking; public transport and walking are good options for school-run logistics. The hub is easy to find and the team will meet you at the garden space on arrival.
The site is outdoor and partially sheltered. Please plan for sun protection and comfortable layers for children, and expect some uneven ground typical of community gardens.
Important Information
Children should be accompanied by a parent or guardian and supervised at all times. Activities involve basic garden tools and compost handling, so parents should assess suitability for very young children and ensure appropriate footwear.
If anyone in your group has allergies to bee stings or certain plants, please bring any required medication and inform a volunteer on arrival. The program includes simple food handling (shared morning tea) so be mindful of allergies.
Sessions run rain or shine; in adverse weather the organisers may cancel for safety and will update participants where possible. Wear sun-safe clothing and be prepared for outdoor conditions while enjoying the learning experience.
Booking and Prices
Attendance details: bookings are handled through an external Humanitix page; please review Humanitix privacy and booking policies before registering. Walk-ups may be welcome but spots are limited on busier dates.
The program is free to attend, reflecting Randwick Council’s community sustainability initiatives. Donations or volunteer sign-ups are welcomed to support ongoing garden maintenance and activities.
For the smoothest experience, book in advance, arrive a few minutes early to sign in, and bring basic supplies listed above. This keeps sessions running on time and ensures all families enjoy the community gardening benefits.
