Celebrate Reconciliation Week through a vibrant, hands-on art experience designed especially for children. This collaborative mural activity invites young participants to explore themes of community, connection, and the voices of First Nations young people shaping the future. It’s a wonderful opportunity for families to engage creatively while learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
The sessions are supported by a curated selection of books by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children’s authors, blending storytelling with artistic expression. Children and families are encouraged to drop in, contribute to the mural, and be part of a meaningful community artwork.
This event is perfect for parents looking to inspire their children with cultural awareness and creativity in a welcoming library environment.
The activity is part of the After School Activity zone program and takes place at multiple Brimbank library branches including Sunshine, Keilor, St Albans, and Sydenham Libraries. It is scheduled for May 25, 2026, from 15:30 to 17:00.
Children will work together on a large mural, reflecting on the 2026 Reconciliation Week theme "All In." The session encourages collaboration, creativity, and learning through both art and literature.
Parents can expect a relaxed, drop-in style event where children can express themselves freely and connect with others in the community.
The event is hosted across four Brimbank Libraries: Sunshine Library, Keilor Library, St Albans Library, and Sydenham Library. Each location is accessible by public transport and offers family-friendly facilities.
Families can choose the most convenient library to attend and participate in the mural creation. The libraries provide a safe and welcoming environment for children and parents alike.
Parking and accessibility details vary by location, so checking the specific library’s access information before attending is recommended.
This event is designed for children and their families to celebrate and learn about First Nations cultures through art and storytelling. It is a respectful space acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Wurundjeri and Bunurong Peoples.
Materials for the mural and books will be provided, and no prior registration is required for drop-in participation.
Parents are encouraged to stay with their children during the activity to support and enjoy the creative process together.
The event is free to attend and open to all families with school-aged children. No booking is necessary, allowing for flexible participation.
Families can simply drop in during the scheduled time to join the collaborative mural activity.
For more information, contacting the Brimbank Libraries or visiting their website is recommended.
