Residential odour can impact your comfort and health, especially when it comes from nearby properties. Darebin Council offers support to residents experiencing persistent odour problems that affect their wellbeing. Understanding how to manage and reduce odour emissions can help maintain a pleasant living environment for you and your neighbours.
If you notice odours coming from a neighbour's property, the Council encourages you to first discuss the issue directly with them. Some odours, such as strong chemical smells or fire hazards, require immediate emergency response by calling 000. For gas-related odours, contacting your gas supplier is recommended. Tobacco smoke odours and typical cooking or garden fertiliser smells are generally considered reasonable and not investigated by the Council.
When odours are persistent and impact your health, the Council may investigate further. You will be asked to complete a residential odour log over a 14-day period to document occurrences. This information helps authorised officers determine if the odour is unreasonable or a nuisance requiring action.
This service is provided by Darebin City Council and applies to residents within the Darebin municipality. You can contact the Council for assistance or to obtain the odour log form.
Reducing odour emissions involves practical steps such as:
- Observing weather conditions before undertaking activities that may cause odours, avoiding windy days especially in summer.
- Practicing good housekeeping by composting, mulching organic waste, regularly cleaning and properly storing wheelie bins.
- Avoiding storage of odorous waste near neighbours’ bedrooms and rinsing containers before disposal.
- Handling chemicals and paints carefully to prevent strong odours.
This is a free service provided by Darebin Council. For further support or to report odour concerns, residents can contact the Council directly.
