The Lab Five Dock (Term 3, 2025)

STEM
Other

A technology club for young people with autism focusing on gaming, coding, and 3D printing at Five Dock Library.

What to Expect

The Lab Five Dock offers a welcoming and supportive environment for young teenagers with autism who enjoy working with computers. Participants engage in a vibrant mix of technology activities including gaming, coding, and 3D printing, all designed to build foundational skills. The sessions encourage social development in a relaxed and accepting atmosphere.

Each session is unique and unstructured, allowing participants to explore activities that interest them rather than following a strict curriculum. This approach fosters creativity and enjoyment while learning.

Parents are welcome to stay in the library during sessions, where they can work comfortably with free WiFi and workspaces available.

Activity Details

The Lab Five Dock runs for 9 weeks during school terms, with sessions held every Monday afternoon from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The program is designed for participants aged 10 and above, with a separate program available for those aged 15 and older at The Lab Rhodes.

Participants must bring their own device (BOYD) as the venue does not provide computers or iPads. This ensures that everyone can work on their own technology and projects.

The Lab is based on extensive experience working with hundreds of young people, ensuring a safe, cool, and accepting place to visit, hang out, and learn.

Location and Access

All sessions take place at Five Dock Library, a convenient and accessible location in the City of Canada Bay. The library provides a comfortable setting for both participants and parents, with easy access to public transport and parking nearby.

Parents can relax in the library during sessions, taking advantage of the available workspaces and free WiFi.

The venue is committed to inclusivity and accessibility to ensure all participants have a positive experience.

Important Information

The Lab Five Dock is specifically for young people aged 10 and above who are on the autism spectrum and interested in technology. This age guideline helps tailor the activities to the group’s needs and interests.

Participants need to bring their own device as no equipment is provided on site. This is important for planning and preparation.

The program is designed to be flexible and participant-driven, so attendance at all sessions is encouraged but not mandatory.

Booking and Prices

The full term of 9 weeks costs $419.40. Booking is essential and can be completed through The Lab website, where parents can also register their children and receive further details.

After registration, families will be invited to attend a trial session to ensure the program is a good fit.

This investment supports a unique and valuable program that combines technology learning with social development in a supportive community setting.
