This delightful online session invites children under five to discover the incredible journey of the Bogong moth, an insect that migrates up to 1,000 kilometres each year. The program highlights the cultural significance of these moths to First Nations peoples, offering a unique blend of nature and heritage education.
Children will engage with age-appropriate stories written by First Nations authors and participate in a creative drawing activity inspired by Dr Deanne Gilson, a proud Wadawurrung woman and artist. The session concludes with a storytime and a fun activity that can be continued at home or in the classroom.
This interactive experience encourages participation through chat, while microphones and cameras remain off to ensure a comfortable environment for all attendees.
The program runs for approximately 20 minutes and is designed to support the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF). It is suitable for young children and can be accessed from home or used in educational settings.
The drawing activity is inspired by Dr Deanne Gilson’s artwork, connecting children with Aboriginal art and culture in a meaningful way. The session also includes storytelling that fosters understanding and appreciation of First Nations perspectives.
Groups are welcome to join, making it a great option for playgroups, early learning centres, or family participation.
This is a free online event hosted by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV). Access is inclusive, with resources and support available to ensure everyone can participate comfortably.
Families and educators can join from anywhere with internet access, making it easy to fit into busy schedules. For more information about accessibility and support, the NGV provides dedicated contact options.
Participation requires prior booking to secure a place in the session. Attendees’ microphones and cameras will be turned off during the program to maintain a focused and relaxed environment.
The program is part of the NGV’s First Nations Art Series, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through art and storytelling.
Parents and carers are encouraged to engage with their children during the activities and continue the learning at home with the provided resources.
The event is free to attend but requires booking in advance through the NGV website. Multiple dates are available, providing flexibility to find a convenient time.
Bookings can be made online, and NGV Members have access to special booking options. There are no costs involved, making this an accessible and enriching experience for families.
