Explore the mid-20th century visual arts contributions of two local women artists at Town Hall Gallery.

Shining a light on the often overlooked contributions of women to the visual arts during the mid-20th century, this exhibition highlights the works of two local, yet largely unknown practitioners—Viola Ayling, a ceramicist from Kew, and Grace James, a dressmaker from Surrey Hills.

What to Expect

Discover a unique blend of artistry and craftsmanship through Viola Ayling’s ceramics, ranging from functional to decorative pieces, crafted in her own workshop and kiln. Experience the intricate designs and technical skill that reflect post-war ceramic art.

Grace James’ creations showcase a wide array of garments including daywear, evening wear, and special occasion outfits such as wedding dresses, all made from fabric and knit. This retrospective offers a rare glimpse into the creative legacy of two talented women.

Visitors can expect a thoughtfully curated exhibition that celebrates local heritage and the intersection of art and craft in everyday objects.
