Walk to Work Day is a refreshing national initiative encouraging Australians to embrace walking as a simple yet powerful way to boost mental health and wellbeing. Now in its 27th year, this event highlights the benefits of incorporating walking into daily routines to reduce stress and improve mood.
Participants can expect a supportive community atmosphere focused on promoting healthier workplaces and stronger connections among colleagues. Whether you walk all the way to work or just part of your commute, every step counts towards better mental health.
This event is perfect for families and workplaces looking to foster wellbeing and raise awareness about mental health challenges.
The event takes place on Friday 27 March 2026, from 06:00 to 23:00, allowing flexibility for participants to join at any time during the day. Activities include walking all or part of the commute, organising lunchtime walks, walking meetings, or taking movement breaks.
Teams and individuals are encouraged to register and fundraise in support of the Black Dog Institute, helping to translate research into clinical care and education programs.
Walking for an hour a day has been shown to reduce the risk of major depression by up to 26%, making this event a meaningful way to support mental health.
Walk to Work Day is accessible across workplaces throughout Australia, making it easy for participants nationwide to get involved. The event is designed to be inclusive and accessible, encouraging everyone to build walking into their daily routine regardless of location.
Participants can tailor their walking activities to suit their environment, whether urban or suburban.
This event is free to participate in and open to all Australians. It is supported by the Pedestrian Council of Australia and benefits the Black Dog Institute.
Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. It is recommended to plan walking routes in advance for safety and convenience.
Fundraising is optional but encouraged to support mental health research and programs.
