Step into a world where story, culture, and creativity come alive with Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins. Follow the mermaid in the bay and discover the rich heritage of Warrajamba, a living cultural legacy. This event invites families to engage with hands-on activities that connect you to the ancestral stories of Minjerribah.
Delvene’s sculptural works, crafted from natural materials gathered from Country, provide a unique glimpse into Indigenous art and storytelling. Children and adults alike can create their own mermaid or dugong using artist-designed stamps, making this a truly immersive cultural experience.
This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate care for land, sea, and story in a welcoming museum environment that honours Brisbane’s vibrant culture.
The event is suitable for all ages and offers a free, family-friendly experience with no bookings required. It runs for one day only, from 10:00 to 17:00 on Friday, 13 November 2026. The activities include creative workshops and the chance to explore Delvene’s powerful artworks made from freshwater reeds, beach hibiscus cotton tree fibers, and quampie shells.
Visitors will gain insight into the cultural significance of Warrajamba and Yungong, the dugong, through storytelling and artistic expression. The event is part of the Museum of Brisbane’s Artist in Residence program, supported by Tim Fairfax AC and other generous partners.
