Under the guidance of Mark Grunden, a maestro known from Bad Boys Batucada and Tumbarumba, you’ll explore traditional Brazilian percussion techniques. From samba to samba reggae, the sessions cover a variety of powerful rhythms that will have you feeling like you’re right in the heart of Brazil.
Our sessions are more than just classes; they’re a community. You’ll make new friends, enjoy some vocals alongside the drumming, and get involved in local events and festivals. It’s a fantastic way to connect with others while learning something new.
Activity Details
Classes run every Thursday during school terms from 7pm to 9pm. You can join at any time; there’s no strict course structure, so drop in whenever it suits you. Beginners will be taught the basics of each instrument and rhythm before moving on to songs.
Instruments are provided, but bringing ear plugs, drinks, and snacks is recommended for your comfort. The first class costs $10, then $20 per session with a concession price of $15. There’s also a membership option where you can buy five classes upfront and get one free.
You’ll also have opportunities to perform at community events and street festivals, making this a fun and engaging way to develop your skills.
Location and Access
The classes take place at 49 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, in a hall located underneath the church. The venue is easily accessible by public transport.
You can reach the location via Tram Number 96 (Stop Number 20) or by Bus Numbers 250, 251 (Holden St), and 504 (Park St). This makes it convenient for families coming from different parts of the city.
Important Information
The classes run during school terms with the following dates for 2026: Term 1 from 5 February to 2 April, Term 2 from 23 April to 25 June, Term 3 from 16 July to 17 September, and Term 4 from 8 October to 17 December.
No prior experience is necessary, and the sessions are designed to be inclusive and supportive. Regular members are on hand to assist newcomers, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and engaged.
Payment can be made on arrival via cash or EFTPOS, and you can also pre-purchase tickets through the website.
Booking and Prices
The first class is $10, with subsequent sessions costing $20 each or $15 concession. A special membership deal offers five classes for the price of four, providing great value.
