What to Expect
Discover the art of Sashiko stitching, a beautiful and practical Japanese technique, perfect for repairing your favourite denim jeans or jackets. This workshop invites participants of all ages to creatively explore textile repair while learning a new skill that supports sustainability and circular fashion.
You will be guided step-by-step through the basics of Sashiko stitching, using supplied materials and tools to mend worn or torn denim. It’s a hands-on, fun experience that encourages creativity and mindful consumption.
Whether you’re a beginner or looking to enhance your textile skills, this workshop offers a welcoming environment to learn and connect with others who share an interest in sustainable fashion and craft.
Activity Details
The workshop runs for two hours and is split into two sessions to choose from: Wednesday 1 July 2026 and Wednesday 8 July 2026, both from 17:00 to 19:00.
Participants need only bring their denim jeans or jackets to repair; all other materials such as yarns, threads, repair tools, and fabrics will be provided. The session is suitable for all ages and skill levels.
This event is part of the RMIT x Merri-Bek City Council Circular Campus to Community Project, which focuses on circularity-themed programming including regeneration, repair, recycling, redesign, and rethinking textiles.

The workshop is held at The Hanger - Building 516, Level 2, Room 1, RMIT Brunswick Campus, located at 25 Dawson Street, Brunswick.

Important Information
Please bring your denim items (jeans or jackets) that you wish to repair. All other materials and tools will be supplied by the workshop organizers.
The workshop encourages sustainable practices by teaching repair techniques that extend the life of clothing, reducing waste and promoting environmental awareness.

The cost to participate is $50 per person, with a discounted rate of $35 available for students.
Booking is essential and can be done by registering for either session 1 or session 2 based on your preferred date.
