Confined 17 offers a powerful and moving space where First Nations artists share their stories, culture, and lived experiences through compelling artworks. This exhibition highlights the urgent need for change regarding the disproportionate representation of First Nations Australians in the criminal justice system.
Visitors will experience a diverse collection of artworks created by participants in The Torch’s Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community program. Each piece reflects personal journeys and cultural connections, providing insight into the social and emotional impacts of incarceration. The exhibition is both a celebration of resilience and a call for justice.
The exhibition runs for one day only, on Friday, 12 June 2026, from 10:00 to 17:00. It is the key public showcase of The Torch’s annual program aimed at reducing re-offending rates through visual arts. All proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists, supporting their wellbeing and empowerment.
Confined 17 is held at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery, located at the corner of Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads, Caulfield. The venue is accessible and well-signposted, with public transport options nearby. Visitors are encouraged to follow onsite signage for ease of entry.
This event is suitable for adults and families interested in cultural and social justice themes. Photography and respectful engagement with the artworks are encouraged. The exhibition supports community awareness and reconciliation efforts.
Entry to the exhibition is free. Artwork purchases are welcomed, with 100% of the price going directly to the artists. No prior booking is required, but visitors should plan to arrive during opening hours for the best experience.
