What to Expect
Dive into the tactile world of clay with this immersive workshop designed for all experience levels. You'll explore a variety of hand-building techniques such as pinching, coiling, and slab construction, as well as wheel work to create unique sculptural forms. This is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with texture, gesture, and form, transforming raw clay into expressive artworks.
Throughout the course, you'll be encouraged to take creative risks and develop your own personal style under the guidance of experienced instructor Tina Wheatley. Whether you're new to clay or an experienced maker, this workshop offers a supportive environment to expand your sculptural practice.
Projects will include both freestanding and wall-mounted pieces, allowing you to work across different formats and scales, making it an exciting and dynamic experience for creative parents and their artistic children.
Activity Details
The workshop runs on Saturdays from 10:00 to 14:00, starting on 2026-04-18 and concluding on 2026-06-27. Please note there are three breaks during the term with no classes on 2026-04-25, 2026-05-23, and 2026-06-06.
The course fee of $1044 includes all clay and materials needed for the projects. Students aged 16 years and over are welcome to join, with younger teens (15-17) encouraged to explore the NAS Art Club.
Participants should bring their own art materials such as reference photos, an A4 sketch pad, drawing tools, a towel, protective clothing, and any ceramics tools they already own. Enclosed footwear is essential for safety in the studios.
Location and Access
The workshop takes place at the National Art School, located at Forbes Street & Burton Street, Darlinghurst NSW 2010. The campus is well-equipped with studios designed for ceramics and sculpture work.
Darlinghurst is easily accessible by public transport, and there are nearby parking options for those driving. The venue provides a welcoming and professional environment, perfect for creative exploration.
Important Information
This workshop emphasizes process and experimentation, so be prepared to embrace creative challenges and enjoy the journey of making. Safety is a priority, so please wear enclosed footwear and consider bringing a P2 KN95 disposable mask for studio work.
The course is suitable for adults and mature teens, encouraging a community of learners who share a passion for clay and sculpture. The instructor offers both technical guidance and conceptual prompts to help you push beyond traditional pottery.
