Embark on an exciting adventure through the Australian Museum’s Dinosaurs or Wild Planet galleries with your child using a themed Explorer Backpack. Designed for children aged 3 to 8 years, each backpack is packed with fun activities, explorer gear, and educational resources to spark curiosity and learning.
These backpacks include dress-ups, activity booklets, playmats, floor cushions, and tools to enhance your child's museum experience. The activities are open-ended, encouraging repeat visits and ongoing exploration.
Parents and carers must supervise children at all times to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
The Explorer Backpacks are available for hire on weekdays during the school term at two daily time slots: 10:30 and 13:30. Each hire lasts for two hours, providing ample time to explore and complete activities.
Two themed backpacks are available: Dinosaur Explorer and Animal Explorer. The backpacks include five engaging activities, a field book to take home, and various educational materials.
Due to small items included, backpacks are not suitable for children under 3 years. The hire fee is $8 for member children and $10 for non-member children.
Backpacks can be collected from the Burra staff area on Level 2 of the Australian Museum, located at 1 William Street, Sydney NSW 2010.
The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with free general entry. The program runs during school term weekdays, making it a convenient and educational outing for families.
Children must be supervised by a parent or carer at all times while using the backpacks. The backpacks and their contents must remain on museum premises and be returned on time to avoid additional fees.
A $50 replacement fee applies if the backpack is not returned or returned damaged. The museum provides a 30-minute grace period for returns before additional hire fees apply.
Bookings are recommended due to limited availability and must be made online with a valid credit card. Members receive a 20% discount and must provide membership details at booking and collection.
