Step into a unique rainforest environment at Fred Hollows Reserve, one of the last remaining rainforest gullies in the Sydney metro area. This is a rare opportunity to contribute to preserving a natural creek line in the Eastern suburbs. Volunteers will engage in hands-on bush regeneration activities, including weed removal and planting native species to restore the reserve's natural beauty.
The sessions are designed for community members who want to make a tangible environmental impact while enjoying the outdoors. You will work alongside Council's experienced Bushcare Officers, gaining knowledge about local flora and fauna and sustainable bushland management.
This monthly event is perfect for parents looking to involve their school-aged children in meaningful environmental stewardship, fostering a love for nature and community responsibility.
The Bushcare sessions occur every month on the second Wednesday, running from 09:00 to 12:00. The program continues until December 9, 2026, offering multiple opportunities to participate throughout the year.
Activities include removing invasive weeds that threaten native plants and occasionally planting new native species in sparse areas to encourage biodiversity. The work is physically engaging but rewarding, suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness.
Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy footwear, bring gloves, and dress for outdoor work. Tools and guidance will be provided by the Bushcare Officers.
The meeting point is at the end of Bligh Place within Fred Hollows Reserve, Randwick. This location is accessible by local transport and offers a peaceful natural setting away from the city bustle.
Fred Hollows Reserve is notable for its ecological significance as it contains the last open creek line in the Eastern suburbs and has remained free from urban development.
