Get ready to roll up your sleeves and make a real difference in your local environment. The French Street Friends Group invites families and community members to join their working bees, where you can help protect and preserve the beautiful bushland reserve in Rye. No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to help and enjoy some fresh air.
Volunteers will engage in a variety of activities aimed at supporting biodiversity, such as planting, weeding, and general maintenance. Friendly support staff will be on hand to provide guidance, training, and all necessary tools and equipment. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to involve their school-aged children in meaningful outdoor activities that teach respect for nature.
Come prepared to get a little dirty and have fun while contributing to your community’s green spaces. It’s a great way to meet like-minded neighbours and spend quality time outdoors.
The working bees run for two hours each session, starting at 09:00 and finishing at 11:00. They are scheduled monthly, with the next event on Saturday, 2026-06-06. Activities include:
- Planting native species
- Removing invasive weeds
- General bushland maintenance
Volunteers should wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, long pants, long sleeves, and a hat to protect against the sun and rough terrain. Bringing a water bottle is essential to stay hydrated during the morning.
Please note that events may be cancelled or rescheduled due to extreme weather, Total Fire Ban days, or public holidays.
The meeting point is at the French Street entrance of the French Street Bushland Reserve, located at 16 French Street, Rye, Victoria 3941. Look for the Shire work vehicle to find the group.
The reserve is easily accessible by car, and parking is available nearby. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy nature walks before or after the working bee.
Public transport options to Rye are available, but it is recommended to check schedules in advance if you plan to use them with children.
Safety is a priority, so volunteers must wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory; thongs or sandals are not permitted.
Children should be supervised by their parents or guardians at all times during the event.
Due to the nature of the activities, the event is not suitable for very young children who cannot safely participate in outdoor manual tasks.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gloves if preferred, although gloves will be provided.
Participation in the French Street Friends Group Working Bees is completely free of charge.
No booking is required, but volunteers can contact the organisers for more information or to express interest via email.
For any updates or cancellations, it is recommended to check with the Mornington Peninsula Shire or the Friends Group directly.
