What to Expect
Step into the fascinating world of insects with your children during this special evening event. Guided by experts from the Entomological Society of Victoria, you will explore the incredible biodiversity of Maranoa Botanic Gardens after dark. This is a unique opportunity to spot and learn about various insect species, including spiders and moths.
The event encourages curiosity and discovery as kids get hands-on experience spotting and recording insect sightings. While the focus is on children, adult guardians are required to accompany and supervise their little explorers throughout the walk.
Bring a torch and wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for walking on uneven ground. Downloading the free iNaturalist app beforehand is recommended but not essential.
Activity Details
The event features a guided walk through the gardens to spot spider species, followed by a chance to observe moths on a moth sheet. This interactive session is designed to engage children with nature and promote environmental awareness.
The walk lasts approximately 45 minutes, starting at 18:30 and finishing at 19:15. It is tailored specifically for kids, with a separate session for adults running later in the evening.
Children must be accompanied by an adult guardian who will be responsible for their supervision during the event.
Location and Access
Meet at the Parring Road entry gate off Whitehorse Road at Maranoa Botanic Gardens, Balwyn VIC 3103. This is the main carpark for the gardens. A staff member will greet attendees at this gate to begin the tour.
Please arrive on time as the gardens are locked during the event and no other gates will be open. The location offers a beautiful natural setting perfect for family exploration and learning.
Important Information
Keep an eye on the weather forecast and dress accordingly to ensure comfort during the outdoor walk. Bring a torch to help with insect spotting after dark.
