Ryde Remembers is a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women from the City of Ryde who served in World War I, as well as the families who supported them at home. This ongoing commemoration includes a variety of projects and events designed to educate and engage the community in remembering this significant history.
Visitors and residents can explore a range of meaningful commemorative activities such as restored honour rolls, interactive kiosks, and a series of plaques along the Remembrance Walk in Anzac Park. The initiative also includes symbolic plantings, handmade poppy projects, and annual services on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.
The program features:
- Commemorative services held annually on 25 April (ANZAC Day) and 11 November (Remembrance Day).
- An interactive kiosk and website showcasing over 2,000 local service members with photos and memorabilia.
- Restored WWI honour boards displayed in the City of Ryde Council Chambers.
- Street signs marking 22 local streets named after WWI soldiers and events.
- The Remembrance Walk with 12 commemorative plaques in Anzac Park, West Ryde.
- Community involvement projects such as the 2,000 Poppies handmade tribute.
Key sites include the City of Ryde Council Chambers at 1 Pope Street, Ryde Library where the interactive kiosk and memorial book are located, and Anzac Park in West Ryde for the Remembrance Walk and flagpoles. These locations are accessible to the public and provide an immersive experience into the local history of WWI.
The Ryde Remembers program is an ongoing community initiative supported by the City of Ryde and local historical societies. It is designed to be respectful and educational, suitable for families and school-aged children interested in history and heritage. Annual commemorative events require no prior booking and are free to attend.
All commemorative services and access to installations are free of charge. No bookings are necessary to visit the sites or participate in public events. For more information or group visits, contact the City of Ryde Customer Service Centre.
