Discover an exciting way to combine creativity with environmental awareness through the City of Ryde’s Sustainable Waste to Art Prize (SWAP). This annual event encourages families to repurpose rubbish and recovered materials into unique artworks. It’s a fantastic opportunity for parents and children to engage in eco-friendly art projects from the comfort of home.
The digital workshops provide inspiration and practical ideas to help you transform everyday waste into artistic masterpieces. These sessions are designed to be accessible and fun, perfect for school-aged children and their families looking to learn new skills while contributing to waste reduction.
By participating, you’ll not only nurture your child’s creative talents but also instill important values about sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The SWAP Digital Resources include a series of video workshops developed in collaboration with The Creative Teacher, Adam Galea, and CLIPPED.TV. These workshops align with the SWAP Educational Resource Guide, which is available for download as a PDF.
Activities cover a variety of techniques such as paper mache sculptures, yarn crafts, and other creative ways to reuse plastic and waste materials. The resources are suitable for children aged 8 and above and encourage hands-on participation.
Once inspired, families are invited to enter their completed artworks into the annual SWAP competition, offering a chance to win prizes and showcase their creativity.
All workshops and resources are accessible online, allowing you to participate from anywhere at your convenience. This flexibility makes it easy for busy parents to fit creative, educational activities into their schedules.
The digital format ensures that no special materials are needed beyond common household waste items, making it a low-cost and environmentally friendly activity.
For additional support or information, the City of Ryde Libraries and Customer Service Centre are available to assist.
This program is designed to promote environmental sustainability through art and is ideal for families with school-aged children. Parents should supervise younger children during craft activities involving scissors or adhesives.
The SWAP competition entry details and deadlines are available on the City of Ryde website. Participation in the competition is optional but encouraged to celebrate creativity and sustainable practices.
Please ensure you download the Educational Resource Guide to maximize your experience and follow safety guidelines provided in the workshops.
Access to the SWAP Digital Resources and workshops is free of charge. There is no need to book in advance as the materials are available online for self-paced learning.
Entering the SWAP competition is also free, providing an inclusive opportunity for all families to participate.
