Get ready to roll up your sleeves and make a real difference in your local environment. This monthly working bee invites families to come together to plant native species and support local fauna along the beautiful Elster Creek Trail. It’s a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to connect with nature and learn about the importance of biodiversity.
This session is extra special as the group plans to plant 100 local native plants in honour of Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. Expect a friendly, welcoming atmosphere where everyone’s enthusiasm counts more than experience.
Bring sturdy shoes and gloves if you have them, and prepare for a rewarding morning outdoors with like-minded community members.
The event takes place on Saturday, 9 May 2026, from 10:00 to 12:00. It’s designed to be family-friendly and suitable for school-aged children, making it a perfect weekend outing that combines fresh air, exercise, and environmental education.
Participants will engage in hands-on planting activities, learning about native plants and their role in supporting local wildlife. Volunteers will be guided on how to plant effectively to ensure the best chance of growth and habitat improvement.
Bookings are required to participate, helping organisers manage group sizes and materials. This ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
The planting activity is held at the Elster Creek Trail, located at the corner of Wright Street and Beech Street in McKinnon. The trail is a significant wildlife corridor in Glen Eira, offering a scenic and accessible outdoor setting.
There is ample space for families to gather, and the area is suitable for children to explore under supervision. Onsite signage will help you find the exact meeting point.
Public transport options and parking nearby make it easy to reach the trail, encouraging sustainable travel choices.
Please wear sturdy shoes and gloves to protect your hands and feet during planting. An enthusiastic attitude is just as important as the gear!
The event will proceed in most weather conditions, so dress appropriately for the day. Sunscreen, hats, and water bottles are recommended to keep comfortable.
Safety guidelines and planting instructions will be provided onsite to ensure everyone’s wellbeing and the success of the planting.
This is a free community event, but bookings are essential to secure your spot. You can book online through the Glen Eira City Council website.
Volunteering at this event is a wonderful way to contribute to local environmental efforts without any cost.
Spaces may be limited, so early booking is encouraged to avoid disappointment.
