Immerse yourself in a nurturing environment designed specifically for visual artists at any stage of their career. This program offers a unique opportunity to present your artwork in progress and gain valuable insights from peers and experienced mentors. Using the Creative Critters card game framework, the sessions encourage thoughtful and constructive critique.
Participants will learn not only how to receive feedback but also how to provide meaningful responses to fellow creatives, fostering a vibrant local art community. This is a chance to connect with other artists, build your critique group, and enhance your artistic practice.
The series is led by Kyle McIntyre, Exhibitions & Studio Coordinator at Gertrude Contemporary and an independent curator. Each session involves an explanation of the Creative Critters card deck and its rules, followed by critique rounds where artists present one work each. Feedback is structured and guided to ensure constructive and supportive dialogue.
Artists should bring one artwork in progress to share and a notebook or writing materials to capture feedback and ideas. Spaces are limited to 15 participants per session, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The sessions take place at Counihan Gallery, located at 233 Sydney Rd, Brunswick. This accessible venue is well-known in the local arts community and provides a welcoming space for creative exchange. Public transport options and parking are available nearby, making it convenient for participants from across Merri-bek.
This program is open to visual artists who live, work, or study in Merri-bek. Please notify the organizers of any food allergies or access requirements by contacting arts@merri-bek.vic.gov.au. If you cannot attend after booking, please inform the council to allow others to take your place.
Participation is free but requires booking due to limited spaces. Reserve your spot early to avoid disappointment. Bookings are made through the provided link, and further inquiries can be directed to the Arts Development Officer via phone or email.
